Say “IKEA” and what comes to mind? A big blue box with endless showrooms? Inexpensive furnishings with daunting Swedish names? If you have ever visited the store, then you know the experience. Over the years, it has earned it a loyal following. Its quirky style and vast collection have also spawned the popularity of ‘Ikea hacks’, those brilliant and witty reconfigurations of popular items , like Tonges into wall storage, Mydal bunk bed into a playhouse for two or the Frosta stool into a bicycle. It’s hard not to see these without a smile on your face.
We practice a related hack we call Custom IKEA. It is primarily about kitchen cabinets and closets, knowingly inserted into drywall pockets. But it can also be a coat hook on a felt wall. The idea is to get the storage of custom cabinets, at an IKEA price. But it is also another way to out think the constraints. Take a look at the bedroom closet in this photos, or the 9” deep kitchen cabinets, or the hooks hear the door. All Custom IKEA hacks to one extent or the other.
